Now Toyota Prius Brakes Called into Question
New problems have emerged for Toyota as the brakes on the 2010 Prius have drawn an investigation from the U.S. Transportation Department.
The Prius was one of the few Toyota models that didn’t have problems with it’s accelerator pedals, so it was assumed that Prius owners and prospective buyers were in the clear. Not so fast! The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 124 reports thus far from consumers about problems with Prius brakes. Most of the complaints involve a lack of braking ability in the vehicles when traveling over bumpy or uneven stretches of road. Four accidents have been reported as a result of the issue.
With this issue now stacked upon the global recall of millions of vehicles as a result of the problems with sticking gas pedals, Toyota is scrambling to re-establish itself as one of the leaders in automotive quality standards. Shares of Toyota have fallen roughly 20% on Wall Street as a result of the ongoing issues with safety recalls and suspension of sales of particular models. It’s worth noting that the longer Toyota has problems with it’s image, the better things will look for the struggling U.S. automotive industry. Ford already seems to have regained a foothold, while General Motors is still navigating its bankruptcy and struggling to find a new vision for the future. And while GM may still be years away from any sort of sustainable success, any struggles from its competitors – especially one as highly regarded as Toyota – will be a benefit to the struggling company.
