Qualification: BVSc or MSc in relevant field of Study.

Experience: 1 – 3 years relevant in laboratory animal facility.

Role:

  • Performs daily health assessment, diagnostic evaluations and clinical treatment of laboratory animals.

  • Provides the daily clinical veterinary care (basic medical treatments, diagnostic and technical laboratory procedures) for stock and research animals and maintains appropriate documentation.

  • Collaborates with veterinary staff and investigative staff to review reports and results.

  • Provides surgical assistance including administration of general anesthesia, surgical preparation, and pre-operative care.

  • Operates medical or laboratory equipment (e.g., anesthesia, blood gas, EKG) in area of responsibility.

  • Provides support on technical procedures for investigative staff as required.

  • Maintains awareness of active research projects and clinical cases in their area of responsibility.

  • Review department SOPs and make recommendations for revisions as needed, following BMS guidelines, external guidelines and regulations related to animal care and use.

Skill Set: Must have the knowledge of the biology and proper handling of laboratory animal species; An AALAS certification of ALAT is preferred Individuals who possess appropriate experience, who do not have required AALAS certification must obtain Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within 12 months of assignment to this position; The individual should have familiarity with veterinary procedures and experience with PO, SQ, IM, IV, & IP treatments in rodents and large animals and aseptic VAP maintenance and short procedures using injectable anesthetics, and general anesthesia / peri-operative care for routine procedures;The individual should be familiar with the use of standard equipment within a research based animal facility (e.g., anesthesia, radiology, surgery, hematology, clinical chemistry, blood gas, microbiology, hoods, computers); The individual must be experienced in the acquisition and analyses of laboratory data gathered from the equipment they operate or clinical cases they oversee, and assuring appropriate response to abnormal results; The individual must have proficiency in handling laboratory animals including species that are particularly difficult to deal with; They must have mastery of the requirements and proper use of personal protective equipment for entry into containment areas where potentially hazardous agents are being used and where exposure to zoonotic diseases is possible.
